American University es una institución de doctorado privada situada en un barrio residencial del noroeste de Washington, DC.

Nuestro total de estudiantes de el otoño del 2013 fueron 12.817 inscriptos, con 6.824 estudiantes universitarios de licenciatura, 3.449 estudiantes de tercer ciclo de licenciatura, 1.716 estudiantes de derecho, y 828 estudiantes en programas de certificación que no requieren título , Washington semestre, o AU extranjero. 

Ofrecemos 69 licenciaturas, 73 maestrías y 11 doctorados, y un programa de JD, así como 72 programas de certificación, tanto en el grado y nivel de pregrado. Los cursos se imparten de forma semestre de 15 semanas en el otoño y la primavera, con las clases más cortas del verano plazo. Además, ofrecemos los programas de estudio en el extranjero y descansos alternativos. 87% de nuestros estudiantes de licenciatura y 65% de los estudiantes de nuestra maestros participan en al menos una pasantía. 

Nuestro cuerpo estudiantil es cosmopolita y diversa a nivel mundial, con los 50 estados, el Distrito de Columbia, y 140 países representados. Siete por ciento de los estudiantes de licenciatura y 13% de los estudiantes de postgrado son internacionales. 

La misión de la universidad es realizado por 848 profesores de tiempo completo y casi 1.700 empleados a tiempo completo. 94% de los profesores de tiempo completo mantenga el grado más alto en su campo. Entre nuestros 621 profesores adjuntos son los responsables políticos, diplomáticos, periodistas, artistas, escritores, científicos y líderes empresariales.
